“Mirror”

“Mirror,” Graphite on Bristol Paper, 16.5x18.5,” 2025

Creativity needs stability in order for a good outcome to be produced. I feel the same towards getting ready, because getting ready is a creative act.

This drawing shows a moment of two women getting ready together. I am the woman standing on the left, and my twin sister, Marie, is the woman sitting on the right.

This is the first piece in which I illustrated the anxiety that getting ready can generate. In the reality of this moment, Marie and I were doing our hair and makeup for a night out. As we stood in front of the mirror getting ready together, she began to stress out about her appearance. I could feel her frustration spiraling into anxiety; I stopped getting myself ready and took over her hair, while she focused on her makeup. As we both worked, she relaxed. I liked this collaboration between us because it is simple but a meaningful moment where I could be the stability for her creativity to happen.

I symbolize the transfer of our energies through the section of Marie’s hair I am straightening. In this artwork, I play with the drawing styles of traditional rendering, soft gradients, expressive lines, contour lines, heavy line weight, and empty shapes to represent how each woman is feeling, and how their feelings directly flow into each other.
